Fairhaven, Maryland, located just an hour outside Washington, DC on the Chesapeake Bay, was Wright’s beloved retreat. Wright began taking regular trips to Fairhaven as a child with his family. Filled with much anticipated swimming in the bay, his family loved this little cove community and its natural beauty.
Years later, Wright and his wife would regularly weekend in the little family cottage overlooking the water. He relished this weekly pause from urban Washington, DC. In the mid 1980s, Wright began a series of paintings celebrating bay life inspired by his regular trips to Fairhaven. Wright painted Fairhaven and its residents in all seasons, times of day, and weather. These moody, atmospheric paintings featured solitary figures walking on the beach, as well as the still, quiet scenes of the marshes and the elegant natural curve of the cove, and boisterous images of the community at play, sledding, and sailing.
