Like his home city of Washington DC, Wright was fascinated with the history of his second city, Paris. During his many trips to the city, Wright would spend his time browsing the book stalls and flea markets that lined the Seine for historical photographica in order to portray the city from different places in space and time. Using these materials, Wright painted numerous historical portraits of Paris. Often painting from an aerial perspective of the city, Wright juxtaposed the city’s man-made structures against the sky in order to emphasize its vastness. These panoramic views stretched beyond what any single photograph could capture. Similar to his historical paintings of DC, Wright also used architectural details to convey the time period in his art, capturing by inclusion or omission of specific buildings, bridges and other structures the time period he was depicting.
